Laser (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) has been used in dentistry for about twenty years, while diode lasers have been on the market since the late 1990s. A laser is a mechanical device that generates a ray of light, i.e., the electromagnetic energy of the visible or invisible part of the spectrum. Since its first use in the 1960s, laser technology has been continuously evolving, and in the last two decades it has been widely used in both general and dental medicine, and today we can rightly say that the laser represents an evolution in dental medicine. Compared to conventional methods of treatment (electro - thermocautery or scalpel), laser therapy is gentler, more comfortable, and is much better accepted by patients.
1. SOFT TISSUE LASER
Advantages of using soft tissue lasers:
- BIOSTIMULATION - faster tissue healing, time savings (complete tissue healing from 4 to 7 days)
- PAINLESS - no need for local anaesthesia
- COAGULATION - no bleeding
- MINIMUM TRAUMA - minimal post-operative discomfort, treatment lasts shorter, the patient's recovery is faster, more comfortable and more successful
- PRECISION - faster, more accurate and predictable results. Lasers work exclusively on soft tissues, which means that they are safe to apply around hard tooth structures and implants.
- STERILIZATION AND DISINFECTION - reduce bacterial presence which is excellent for treating periodontal disease
- NO CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR THE USE OF LASERS - can be used freely in children, pregnant women and patients with severe chronic diseases
With proper use, lasers are completely safe to use. The least possible force should always be used for all laser procedures to prevent collateral tissue damage, accelerate healing, and reduce post-operative discomfort.
2. SOFT TISSUE LASER - HELBO LASER THERAPY
Pathogenic bacteria are the biggest cause of failure in dentistry! Studies have shown that the biofilm provides a safe habitat for bacteria, and in proportion to the aging of the biofilm, the resistance of bacteria increases. Mechanical cleaning and rinsing solutions do not remove bacteria within the biofilm well enough, and even strong antibiotics rarely provide sustainable results. For this reason, we use the Helbo laser in our clinic, which destroys pathogenic bacteria with the help of singlet oxygen. The treatment is based on labelling the bacterial wall with photosensitive molecules that are inserted into the biofilm from the HELBO® Blue Photosensitizer. The dye molecules are activated using a laser, and this process transfers the energy to the surrounding oxygen. This creates highly aggressive singlet oxygen that destroys 99% of the bacteria within the biofilm, leaving healthy tissue completely intact. Unlike conventional methods of treatment, Helbo therapy effectively removes infection and pain, accelerates the healing process and has a proven analgesic effect.
Periodontal pathogenic bacteria increase the risk of many diseases:
- periodontitis and periimplantitis
- endodontosis
- caries
- bone necrosis - due to the administration of biophosphonates
- inadequate healing accompanied by apicoectomy
- residual osteitis (impaired implant healing)
